A new circuit
lap record, crashes and racing up to speeds of up to 265 kmh on a
tight circuit, made for close, exciting motorsport at the WesBank
Raceway in Germiston on Sunday.
Reigning WesBank V8 Champion, Hennie Groenewald (SP Racing
Jaguar), stamped his authority on the championship by winning both
races and opening up a lead on Grant van Schalkwyk in his Hi-Q
Jaguar to 38 points. Groenewald has now won four races on the
trot.
In Race 1 over 10 laps, Groenewald, van Schalkwyk and Mackie Adlem
(Fuchs Lubricant Mustang), raced nose-to-tail throughout, with
Welkom’s Jaco Correia (Omega Spares Corvette) holding off young
chargers, Robert Briggs (Timken Bearing Jaguar) who had come from
the back of the 19 car field, and Gordon Connelly (Dezzi/Cowan
Signs Jaguar). Groenewald left the lap record at 1 minute 6.384
seconds.
The inverted grid for Race 2 over 14 laps saw Groenewald, starting
from 4th spot, tear through the field in just 4 laps to
open up a 5 second lead over Adlem, and the consistent Jimmy Auby
(Tyco/Jonnesway Jaguar) who now lies 3rd in the
championship after 8 races. Robert Briggs did another sterling
job to finish 4th at the flag, ahead of Connelly and
van Schalkwyk in 6th, who spun out of contention.
Two crashes side-lined Zane Pearce (Hi-Q Jaguar), who spun on the
infield, and hit the wall with the nose of his car, and Jaco
Correia, who lost all means of slowing his car down at the end of
the long straight, spun his car and reversed it into the wall.
