WesBank V8 Supercars have two new
winners. Twice Volkswagen Polo-Cup Champion, Robert Briggs (Team
Timken Jaguar), took the first of two races at Killarney in Round
11 of the WesBank V8 Championship, and Mackie Adlem (Kyalami Fuchs
Titan Mustang) had his first win of the year in the longer
12-lapper that followed.
Briggs took the lead from pole position in Race 1, ahead of
reigning champion, Hennie Groenewald (Timken SP Racing Jaguar),
and held it all the way to the flag. Both were lapping at close
to the lap record with veteran racer Larry Wilford (Fuchs Titan
Mustang), with a new Ford engine keeping them honest and waiting
to pounce if either Briggs or Groenewald made a mistake.
Behind the leading threesome Jaco Correia (Omega Spares Corvette)
in a rebuilt car that was wrecked in a heavy prang at the WesBank
Raceway two months ago, held off a fast closing Mackie Adlem,
Gordon Connelly (Dezzi/Cowan Signs Jaguar) and Jade Gutzeit (Dezzi/Trysome
Jaguar). All were within sight of a lap record.
An inverted grid was used for the longer Race 2. Here Danie
Correia (Omega Spares Corvette) led the way with Willie Hepburn
(Project Orange Corvette) in tow until the high-speed pack
arrived, led by Adlem, Connelly and Franco di Matteo (Deltec
Batteries Jag).
Briggs and Groenewald from the middle of the pack at the start of
the race had a coming together which pushed them back in the field
to finish 6th and 8th. Des Gutzeit (Dezzi/Trysome
Jag) took his highest placing of the season in 5th
position.
