Robert
Briggs (Timken Jaguar) in his rookie year, took his second and
third wins of the WesBank V8 Championship at Zwartkops on Saturday
with some aggressive driving.
From pole position, set at just under the magic one-minute
barrier, Briggs - a two-time winner of the Polo Cup Series -
romped away to win from championship leader, Hennie Groenewald
(Timken/SP Racing Jaguar), to make it a one/two for the Timken
Jaguar team. Groenewald challenged and took the lead for one lap
of the 15, only for his team-mate to pass him again. Gordon
Connelly (Dezzi/Cowan Signs Jaguar) led home Jade Gutzeit (Dezzi/Trysome
Mustang) by a car length for 3rd spot. Steve Smith
(Cool Cat Carrier Jaguar) did the same to Deon Auby (Tyco Chev
Lumina) for 5th. Adlem (Kyalami Fuchs Mustang) ran
into the back wheel of Willie Hepburn’s Project Orange Corvette
and put Hepburn out of the race on lap 2.
The second race over the same distance as race 1, using an
inverted starting grid, with Richard Pinard (Permatex/Timken
Jaguar) leading the way. Groenewald passing the competition on
every corner from way down the field, ended when Mackie Adlem on
the final corner of lap 3 ran into Groenewald and Jade Gutzeit,
ending their chances of finishing in the points.
Briggs from behind avoided the accident and picked off the
opposition to give him his second victory of the day. Adlem
recovered to finish 2nd with Hepburn forcing himself
into 3rd spot ahead of Connelly and Deon Auby.
