Hennie Groenewald (SP Racing/Timken/Jaguar) is 2007 South African WesBank V8 Supercar Champion.   After a drought of wins since June at the Phakisa Raceway, Groenewald came back with a bang before a record crowd at Aldo Scribante In Port Elizabeth on Saturday, to win both races and retain his WesBank V8 Championship.   His tally this season has been 8 wins from 16 races, with 4 races to go.

From pole position in Race 1 Hennie Groenewald made short work of winning.   The safety car came out after Marc Auby (Masana Petroleum Jaguar) Patrick Seddon (Jonnesway Chev) and Zane Pearce (Hi-Q Jaguar) collided at the first corner of the race.

Back in racing after a two meeting lay-off Grant van Schalkwyk (Hi-Q Jaguar) was back on form and finished a second behind Groenewald.   Deon Auby (Tycon Jonnesway Jaguar) father of the two Auby boys, Marc and Jimmy, got his first podium in third spot.   Popular veteran Willie Hepburn (Motorsport Logistics Corvette) was 4th with the fastest rookie of the year, Robert Briggs (Timken Jaguar) 5th and Gordon Connelly (Dezzi Cowan Signs Jaguar) 6th

The second race saw the 8 fastest drivers starting in reverse order on the grid.   Veteran Larry Wilford (Fuchs Titan Mustang) led away from the rolling start, ahead of Hepburn and Connelly, until Hepburn took over first spot for a while.

Groenewald from 7th on the grid took 9 laps to get to the front ahead of Briggs, who has won 3 of his last 4 races.  Hepburn was 3rd with van Schalkwyk claiming 4th ahead of Marc Auby and Larry Wilford.
