2007 WesBank V8 Supercar Champion, Hennie Groenewald, hopes to roll out his new SP Racing Chev Lumina Challenger for the 2008 championship when 20 WesBank cars line up for their final two races at Kyalami this Saturday (24th November 2007).

“With this year’s championship sewn up, it will be an ideal opportunity to prove the competitiveness of this new car,” says Hennie Groenewald, one of South Africa’s fastest all-rounders, going for a hat trick of V8 titles in 2008.   “Nothing gets a racing car sorted out like full blown competition, particularly against a driver like my team-mate and top rookie this year, Robert Briggs (Timken Jaguar), who has posted four wins in his debut year and is hungry for more, and giving Timken a 1-2 in the championship for the season.”

Grant van Schalkwyk (Hi-Q Jaguar), who has slipped down to 3rd position on the points table, has two problems as he lines up for these two races.   He has to catch Briggs, who is 7 points ahead of him, and has former Formula GTi  single seater champion, Gordon Connelly (Dezzi/Cowan Signs Jaguar) tied with him on points.   Connelly, one of three drivers to always finish in the points this year, and his team have shown what can be done with a small budget, hard work and dedication

Another flyer, Mackie Adlem (Kyalami Fuchs Titan Mustang), hopes to make Kyalami a happier hunting ground than it has been for him this year.    A couple of wins could improve his 5th position on the points table.

The competitive Auby family, is back in force.  Father Deon (Jonnesway Tools Lumina) has had some good finishes, whilst son Jimmy (Tyco Jonnesway Jag) and Marc (Masana Petroleum Jag) who have missed a few meetings, due to being away testing an A1 GP car for Lebanon, will be sure to keep the leaders on their toes.

A force to be reckoned with is Roof of Africa motorcycle winner, Jade Gutzeit (Dezzi Trysome Mustang), who goes well at Kyalami.   His father, Des, in a similar car, has finished all the races this year bar one.   Terry Wilford (Fuchs Titan Mustang), the GT2 Champion in 2006, takes over the family car from his father, Larry, who was fastest of all on the country’s quickest circuit in East London.

Other youngsters in the reckoning are Danie Correia (Omega Motor Spares Corvette), flying the family flag on his own, and the comeback kid, Wade van Zummeren (Teazers Mustang), who in two races at the coast collected a cool 29 points.

Evergreen Willie Hepburn (Motorsport Logistics Corvette), now in his mid-60’s, continues to amaze with his competitiveness, finishing in 2nd and 3rd in most races.   Now he needs a win to finish the season.   Richard Pinard (Team Permatex Jag), is a model of consistency and is always in the action and scoring points.   After a great start to the season, Franco di Matteo (Deltec Batteries Jag), needs to finish his year on a high with a couple of strong placings.

Talent that has been plagued with crashes and non-finishes is Zane Pearce (Hi-Q Jaguar), the wherewithal behind the Hi-Q team, who when he is on song, can take on any competitor.   Steve Smith (Cool Cat Carriers Jaguar) hasn’t raced at Kyalami this year and could surprise some others when he decides to go. Johnny Eckhout (Johnspeed Cobra Astra) makes a rare appearance, as does Steve Herbst (Prei Instrumentation Jag).

A new car making its debut, a three-way fight for 2nd place in the championship, the return of a number of youngsters from overseas, plus the speed and thunderous sounding high revving V8’s, points to two great WesBank V8 races to bring the 2007 season at Kyalami to a close.
