SPECTACULAR WESBANK V8 SUPERCAR
RACING AT KILLARNEY
Close high speed racing, spectacular crashes, a blown engine
coating the Killarney Circuit with oil, and reigning WesBank
V8 Supercar Champion, Hennie Groenewald, (Havoline Jaguar),
winning both the 8 lap sprint and the reverse grid 12 lapper,
to tie for the lead on the points table with Kyalami winner,
Grant van Schalkwyk (Hi-Q Jaguar), sums up some of the WesBank
racing at Cape Town on Saturday.
Race 1 saw Groenewald from pole position lead the way with van
Schalkwyk, Marc Auby (Masana Petroleum Jaguar), Mackie Adlem
(Fuchs Lubricants Ford) and Zane Pearce (Hi-Q Jaguar) and
Jimmy Auby (Jonnesway Bosal Jaguar) in close attendance.
Suddenly Jaco Correia (Omega Spares Corvette) popped a V8
motor, causing mayhem with oil making the track unraceable. In
the meantime Larry Wilford (Fuchs Lubricants Mustang), had
gone off the road in the oil and Zane Pearce (Hi-Q Jaguar) had
a heavy coming together with Vernon Bricknell (Nationwide
Jaguar), putting him out for the day.
The race was red-flagged after 3 laps.
At the re-start for a new race of 6 laps, Groenewald made no
mistake. He romped into the lead and won by nearly 3 seconds.
Mackie Adlem, doing a fine job of keeping van Schalkwyk behind
him on every corner, came home 2nd. Then came Jimmy Auby,
Larry Wilford and Gordon Connelly (Dezzi/Cowan Signs Jaguar)
in a bad handling car in 6th.
The 12 lapper saw the fastest 8 drivers swop grid positions,
with van Schalkwyk and Groenewald starting from 7th and 8th
place. Engen VW Polo Champion, Robert Briggs (Timken Jaguar),
and Larry Wilford made the running at the front, until van
Schalkwyk and Groenewald arrived in a hurry. Groenewald passed
van Schalkwyk and went to the front at the Cape Town corner
with a few laps to go, after what he described as an enjoyable
race. Behind these two came Jimmy Auby, Connelly, Pearce and
Wilford, posting the second fastest lap of the race. Adlem
retired when a wheel rim failed. Richard Pinnard (Team
Permatex Jaguar) had diff trouble, and Jaco Correia went off
the road at Damps Dip and retired.
