The elder statesman of South Africa Motor Sport, Willie Hepburn (65) in his Project Orange Corvette, took his first Wesbank V8 race win in 6 years when he won a dramatic event on the East London Grand Prix Circuit on Saturday.   His last National Championship win was on the same circuit in April 2002.

Almost as expected, Robert Briggs (Team Timken Jaguar) led the first race from pole, after setting up an incredible time in practice by lapping at an average speed of 182 kmh.   On his tail he had youngster Mark Auby (Jonnesway Tools Jaguar),  veteran Willie Hepburn, the talented 20-year-old local boy, Wade van Zummeren (Border Towing Mustang) and 16-year-old Brandon Auby (Masana Petroleum Jaguar) all passing and re-passing each other.  While all this was going on, Hennie Groenewald (Team Timken Holden Commodore) who started from the back of the grid thanks to a penalty for colliding with Franco di Matteo (Optima Batteries Jaguar) at Zwartkops two weeks ago, was passing one and two cars per lap in another epic drive that took him to 3rd place overall.   Within sight of the flag Hepburn, going for a strong 4th position, spun coming out of the last corner and dropped back to 10th

From the start of Race 2 with its inverted grid, the Correia brothers, Danie and Jaco (Omega Motor Spares Corvettes), Deon Auby (Meta Forge Mustang), Wade van Zummeren, Franco di Matteo (Optima Batteries Jaguar) and Hepburn led the way into the 240 kmh Potters Pass Corner.    Someone in this high-speed pack tagged di Matteo into a heart-stopping spin.   Hennie Groenewald starting from 10th position couldn’t avoid di Matteo’s Jaguar and took off his rear wing to make his car virtually un-driveable.

Jaco Correia led for four laps until Deon Auby, father of his two racing sons Mark and Brandon, came past, followed by Hepburn, who took over the lead and held on to win by 2.3 seconds.   Local boy, Wade van Zummeren, having a good outing, claimed his second 4th position for the day and a brilliant 2nd spot overall when all the points were added up.  He was just ahead of another veteran, Larry Wilford (Fuchs Titan Mustang).

The overall winner for the day was Deon Auby.
