WESBANK V8 ACTION FOR PORT ELIZABETH

With two WesBank V8 race meetings left this season, newly crowned triple  WesBank V8 Champion (2006, 2007, 2008), Hennie Groenewald (Team Timken Holden), is still going to be fighting it out for more race wins at the Aldo Scribante Circuit in Port Elizabeth on Saturday (4th October).   So far this season he has already chalked up 10 wins in 16 races.

Besides normally winning the first WesBank race on the programme, Groenewald is spectacular in the second reversed starting grid event, where he generally starts from the back of the field and demonstrates his skill getting past the field at high speed to go into the lead.

The delay in announcing Groenewald’s hat trick of WesBank V8 Championships was due to a technical inspection of the WesBank field after the meeting at Zwartkops at the beginning of September.

Behind Groenewald there is war between veteran racer, Willie Hepburn (Project Orange Corvette), who is retiring after the last race of the season at Kyalami, and two youngsters on their way to future championships – Mark Auby (Jonnesway Jaguar) and twice Polo Cup Champion, Robert Briggs (Team Timken Jaguar).   There are just 11 points between these three.   They will continue the nose-to-tail battle they had at Zwartkops, where they finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th.   Overall wins are not impossible from these three in P.E.

Star of the show at the last round at Zwartkops was one of the three racing Auby’s.  This time it was a 16-year-old sensation, Brandon (Masana Petroleum Jaguar), who came home to win his first WesBank V8 race.   This makes him the youngest and most mature driver to have ever won a race for cars with 450 kWs with a top speed of 300kmh.   This despite his clutch failing on the finishing line with his brother, Mark, on his tail.   His father, Deon, (Meta Forge Holden) who lies 6th overall in the Championship, was not far behind his racing boys in 7th spot.

The 3rd member of Team Timken, Richard Pinard (Jaguar) has done a solid job, as he has done throughout his racing career in V8’s for the team.   He lies 5th overall.   That includes two wins in P.E. and Phakisa.  He could surprise with another one on Saturday.

Welkom’s finest racers, Jaco Correia and his younger brother, Danie, both in Omega Spares Corvettes, are just 3 points apart after a long fight.   Jaco has come from behind to lead his brother, Danie.   There are certainly no team instructions.

Another young man and former South Africa Karting Champion, Bjorn Roos (SP Racing Jaguar) is another driver on the move since joining the V8 series two meetings ago at Phakisa.   Already he has gathered 13 points and wants more.

Veteran Larry Wilford (Fuchs Lubricants Mustang), is a threat to all and goes particularly well on the twists and turns of the Aldo Scribante Circuit.   Franco di Matteo (Optima Batteries Jaguar), after a disastrous meeting at Zwartkops, will be out to change all that in P.E.   He will have to hurry as he is being stalked by former WesBank V8 Champion, Roelf du Plessis (Venter Motors Lumina SS), who can take on - and sometimes take off - anyone in the line-up.

Des Gudzeit (Dezzi/Trysome  Mustang), is another racing father who is always there gathering points and enjoying driving these big fast cars.   Clare Vale (Gatorback Ram Mustang) must be the bravest girl in South African motor racing.   From her first nervous entry into WesBank V8 Racing, she is now beginning to be a points-scorer, which is not easy in an aggressive man’s world.

Finally, two East Londoners are making their presence felt.   Wade van Zummeren (Border Towing Mustang) who is generally up with the leading pack or nowhere at all, whilst Darren Gudmanz (Crazy J’s Corvette) after a few years away from motor racing made a come-back on his home track, and without fuss has already gathered 18 points with more to come.

The Aldo Scribante Circuit guarantees high speeds, close racing and lots of passing.   Saturday should be no different, whatever the weather forecast might be.
