With his hat trick of Wesbank V8
Championships in the bag Hennie Groenewald (Team Timken Holden)
can almost afford to relax when he lines up at Kyalami this
Saturday (25th October 2008) with 20 other cars for
the final round of the Wesbank V8 Championship. However that is
not the nature of the man who will be going all out to increase
the twelve wins he has had so far this year. His overall score
sheet in Wesbank racing now totals 43 wins, fast approaching the
all time record of 57 wins set by Hennie van der Linde.
Behind Groenewald is a three way fight between one of the racing
Auby family, Mark (Jonnesway Jaguar) who has not had a win this
season, but has 144 points, Robert Briggs (Team Timken Jaguar)
who with two wins is level on points with veteran Willie Hepburn
(Project Orange Corvette). Hepburn who has one win and is
having second thoughts about retiring after this race. These
drivers have been slugging it out all year at high speed with
door handle to door handle racing. Kyalami will be no
different.
Also coming into this fight is South Africa’s fastest 16 year
old bar none - Brandon Auby (Masana Petroleum Jaguar) who with
has picked up thirty six points at the last two meetings at
Zwartkops where he won and in Port Elizabeth. Eight of the
eighteen races so far have seen Brandon retire with mechanical
maladies which now seems to be over.
The third member of the Team Timken Team, Richard Pinnard has
enjoyed the best success of his career. He is almost safe in
fifth spot overall to give the all powerful Team Timken trio
first, second and fifth on the championship points table.
A reversed starting grid in the second race brings other
competitors to light as drivers who finish high up in the first
race start at the back of the grid. They have to show their
skills getting past 20 cars to the front. It is not easy to do
particularly at Kyalami.
Deon Auby (Meta Forge Holden) is the highest points scorer of
the racing fathers. There are three of them in the field –
Wilford, Auby and Gutzeit. Auby has to watch his back as he has
the racing Correira brothers, Jaco and Danie in their Omega
Spares Welkom Corvette plus another veteran Franco de Matteo
(Optima Batteries Jaguar) closing in. They are all quick.
Larry Wilford (Fuchs Lubricants Mustang) got into racing late
this year and started to make serious progress. A couple of
DNF’s set back his chances of finishing high up on the leader
board. Two good results on Saturday could see him move up three
places in the championship. Larry’s son Terry Wilford (Fuchs
Lubricants Jaguar), the 2006 GT2 Champion will also be in the
line up at this final meeting. He has missed a few meetings
this year, but when he does compete he always finishes in the
points.
Six non-finishes also set back former champion Roelf du Plessis
(Venter Motors Lumina SS). He could provide a big surprise at
Kyalami.
East London’s Wade van Zummeren (Border Towing Mustang) and
Darron Gudmanz (Crazy J’s Corvette) always give a good account
of themselves when they are mobile.
Des Gutzeit (Dezzi Trysome Mustang) always does well at Kyalami
and Saturday should not be any exception.
Breaking news is that former Wesbank Champion, Ben Morgenoord
out of the V8 Formula for a few years is back for the last
meeting of the season. He has been keeping his eye in by
winning the Class B Production Car Championship in his Mazda
Rotary and racing his Trans Am Mustang in the Historic Racing.
Bjorn Roos (SP Racing Jaguar,) a former South African Karting
Champion has gathered thirteen points in just three race
meetings - a good start in this sort of competition.
Lady racer Clare Vale (Gatorback Ram) is now a regular points
scorer after a nervous start to the season. She finished fourth
overall at Port Elizabeth and was awarded her first Wesbank
trophy.
New to the series is Niel Harmse.
The sound of 20 V8’s starting up and warming up their engines in
the pits before getting onto the track is good enough to stir
any motor sport fan at Kyalami on Saturday. |
