Twenty two thundering Wesbank V8’s with 450
kw under the bonnet packed onto the tight Killarney circuit all
racing in one class and hitting speeds above 260 kmh down the
back straight in close company, means one thing for Cape Town
motorsport crowds. Exciting entertainment.
Add to this,
three new Chevrolet Lumina SS’s taking the fight to the previous
winners of the Wesbank championship, - the Ford engined
Jaguars. This plus a number of new young guns, and a lady racer
for the first time in Wesbank racing, mixing it with some of the
vets, and all doing well, promises a pair of breathtaking motor
races.
Teammates in the Team Timken pits Hennie Groenewald (Lumina) and
the new young Rookie of the Year last year, Robert Briggs
(Jaguar), are tied at the top of the point’s table. On the
track they will go for each other. At Kyalami they shared a win
and a second place apiece. Keeping them both honest is Mark
Auby (Jonnesway Tools Lumina SS), one of the four Auby family
racers, three of whom will be at Killarney. Jimmy is away
racing in the A1 GP in China for Team Lebanon.
Sixteen year old Brandon Auby (Masana Petolium Jaguar) was one
of the stars in the first round at Kyalami in his first ever
outing in a monster car like this. He took a third place behind
Briggs and Groenewald. He passed no less than thirteen other
competitors from the back of the grid and raced it out with
stars like Willie Hepburn (Project Orange Chevrolet Corvette)
now in his 65th year and about to retire from
National racing at the end of 2008, former champion Roelf du
Plessis (Venter Motors Lumina SS) and Franco di Matteo (Optima
Batteries Jaguar) – some of the fastest racers in the country.
Brandon’s father Deon will be out in a Meta Forge Jaguar just to
keep an eye on his young son.
Behind Hepburn, who now lies third in the championship is 2006
GT2 Champion Terry Wilford (Fuchs Lubricants Jaguar) in a car he
has not driven before and Roelf du Plussis one of the iron men
of Wesbank V8 racing. Jade Gutzeit (Dezzi/Trysome Mustang) is
another driver on his way to big things. He is a Roof of Africa
motorcycle winner and is always in the hunt. It wont be long
before he is on the podium.
Another talented racer is Gordon Connelly (Cowan Signs/Dezzi Jaguar) who
lives with the best and is overdue for a podium finish. The
third member of Team Timken is “Mr. Consistency” Richard Pinard
(Jaguar) who keeps piling on the points at every outing.
Some drivers should do well when just about the entire starting grid is
reversed for the second race. Brothers like the Correia’s from
Welkom in their Omega Motor Spares Corvette. Younger brother
Danie is starting to finish higher up the finishing order than
his older brother Jaco. The latter had a terrible time at
Killarney last year when he was punted off the circuit and
bent his car.
The reverse grid is a popular race with spectators. Here, winners of the
first race start right at the back of the grid and have to pass
some fliers at the front like Wade van Zummeren (Border Towing
Mustang) who has already been a winner and could repeat it in
Cape Town, Dez Gutzeit (Dezzi/Trysome Mustang), new comer Rob
Wall (P2P Squared Holdings Mustang), Clare Vale (The Truck Man
Mustang) who has done an exceptional job in her last few outings
and Steve Herbst (Prei Instrumentation Corvette).
A definite man to watch is Wesbank V8 veteran, Larry Wilford, who has been
at the forefront of Wesbank V8 racing since the start. He is
back in his beloved Fuchs Lubricant Mustang, which he has made
into one of the fastest cars. Johnny Eekhout (Johnspeed Cobra
Corvette) to Cape Town is set to start his comeback to V8 racing
in 2008.
For close, exciting racing, WesBank V8’s at high speed on a tight circuit
is hard to beat.
Get to Killarney this Saturday (5th April 2008). |
