Three
times South African WesBank V8 Champion, Hennie Groenewald, (Team
Timken Holden) made a serious dent in the domination the Auby
family have had this year in the V8 title race when he won both
races at the Zwartkops International Raceway on Saturday. This
puts him joint third in the championship with Deon Auby (ELT
International Holden) with six races to run to the end of the
season.
In
the first 15-lapper Groenewald won with relative ease (1.3 seconds)
from championship leader, Marc Auby, his 17-year-old brother,
Brandon, both in ELT International Jaguars, and their flying father,
Deon. The Auby’s were separated by one second at the flag.
Coming on strong in his LiquiMoly Corvette was Jaco Correia of
Welkom just .5 sec in arrears.
The
challenge between veteran Willie Hepburn (Corvette) and Ben
Morgenrood (The STIG Lumina) went to the latter when Hepburn went
off the road and finished 5 seconds behind. Other notable point’s
scorers were East London’s Darron Gudmanz (Crazy J’s Corvette) Carel
Pienaar (SP/Timken Motorsport Jaguar), who builds the cars, Danie
Correia (LiquiMoly Corvette), Romano Sartori (Jaguar) and Harry
Mayer having his first race in the ex-Wilford Mustang.
The
inverted starting grid used in Race 2 saw Groenewald start in
mid-pack with seven cars to pass. He picked them off with some
aggressive driving. Franco di Matteo (Varta Batteries Jaguar) had
a win in sight when he broke a half-shaft on the last lap. This
allowed Groenewald through to take a comfortable win of 3 seconds
from Deon Auby, who had taken his son, Brandon, off the track on the
hairpin to his great embarrassment. Richard Pinard (Timken
Motorsport Jaguar) and Jaco Correia who was named Sasol’s Driver of
the Day were next ahead of Marc Auby who settled for the points
awarded for a 5th position. Hepburn beat Morgenrood
this time by 5 seconds.
