The
Auby family racers, Brandon, Marc and father Deon, racing the ELT
International Jaguars and a Holden, dominated the WesBank V8 Races
at the Phakisa Raceway in Welkom on Saturday (5th
September.)
Driving sensation, 17-year-old Brandon, fresh from writing his
Matric Prelims on Friday, was top points scorer. His winning of
race 1 from pole position and a 5th position in a
dramatic second race brought him to within 14 points of his
championship leading brother, Marc. With four races to go in the
season Brandon is now a serious contender for the title.
Second highest points scorer on Saturday was Franco di Matteo (Varta
Batteries Jaguar) who won Race 2 by 1.5 seconds after moving to the
front of the field on lap 6, where he stayed to the flag.
Billed as a shot-out between the Big Five, it was just that in Race
1. From pole position Brandon Auby went to the front, where he
stayed to the flag despite a heavy challenge from five-time WesBank
champion, Hennie Groenewald (Team Timken Holden).
Groenewald was surrounded by Marc Auby in 3rd and Deon
Auby 4th with Jaco Correia (LiquiMoly Corvette) in the
picture in 5th spot.
With
a reverse starting grid used for the second dramatic 10-lapper,
Terry Wilford (Fuchs Titan Jaguar) led for the first lap. Local
hero, Jaco Correia then went to the front for the next four laps
until mid field starters Franco di Matteo and Hennie Groenewald
moved in for the kill with Brandon Auby and Ben Morgenrood (The Stig
Lumina) in the hunt. After taking the lead, Groenewald and Brandon
had a coming together leaving Franco di Matteo in a safe first
spot.
Richard Pinard (Team Timken Jaguar) moved into second place with
Jaco Correia fighting back to third after an off. A relaxed
Morgenrood back on form was 4th.
