The brothers Auby, Brandon (17)
and Marc (ELT International Jaguars) took a win apiece in a drama
packed pair of WesBank V8 Races at Killarney on Saturday. This
puts them first and second in the championship points standing after
3 rounds.
In a series that is fast turning into an Auby family
show, father Deon (ELT International Lumina), took a 2nd
place behind his younger son in Race 1 and an 8th in Race
2 to go 4th overall, just 1 point behind young East
Londoner Wade van Zummeren – (Border Towing Mustang), who lies 3rd
in the Championship.
The first race was all about 3-times WesBank V8
Champion, Hennie Groenewald (Team Timken Jaguar), who after winning
two races in America in the last month, needed to get back to
scoring points to start moving up the points table after a
disastrous start to his WesBank Season. He made no mistake from
start to finish in Race 1 and finished .3 seconds ahead of Brandon
Auby with Deon 3rd and Marc Auby 4th at the
flag.
Then came to a shock to the Timken Team when Clerk of
the Course, Piet Swanepoel, penalised Groenewald 30 seconds for
taking up pole position on the starting grid after Hennie had
stopped out on the circuit with a loose wheel on the out lap from
the pits on his way to line up at the start. He took up pole
position as instructed by the start line officials before coming
under starters orders. The penalty dropped him to 10th position
and left the Auby’s in the first three positions, which must be a
first in South African Motor Sport History.
Wade van Zummeren came home 4th after
Groenewald’s penalty with Franco di Matteo (Varta Battery Jaguar),
Danie Correia (LiquiMoly Corvette) from Welkom, his brother Jaco in
another Corvette, Richard Pinard (Team Timken Jaguar) and a
returning Mackie Adlem (Mackie Adlem Racing Jaguar) fighting out 6th
place in close company, which could have gone to any one of them.
The inverted grid used for the second race saw Clare
Vale (Gatorback / RAM Mustang) lead for a couple of laps before
Richard Pinard took over, until Marc Auby and Adlem steamed past
with a few laps to go to finish 1st and 2nd.
Pinard was 3rd. Groenewald made good progress from 9th
to 5th after two laps until his engine lost power and he
cruised home to finish 7th and a poor helping of points.
