After an eventful sixth round of this year's WesBank V8 Supercars
Championship at Zwartkops in early September, the Sasol fueled,
GOODYEAR shod field is at Killarney on Saturday, 02 October to put
on a repeat performance for the Western Cape enthusiasts.
In the Super GT Class, Brandon Auby (ELT International/SKF Jaguar)
stormed to an easy win in Heat 1 at Zwartkops, with his father Deon
Auby in a similar car backing him up in second place - but he
shouldn't have as easy a time at Killarney. Jaco Correia (Liqui Moly
Corvette) was in superb form at Zwartkops, making a remarkable come
back after a huge smash at Phakisa in Round 5. He did not take part
in Heat 1 at “The Big Z”, owing to power steering problems with his
machine, and as a result started Heat 2 at the back. In what was
arguably one of the drives of the season, Jaco stormed through the
pack and finished runner up to younger brother Danie Correia, who
was equally impressive scoring his second outright win of 2010.
Sibling rivalry, if nothing else, should propel these two Welkom
stars to better things this year.
Behind these four drivers, come the rest of the pack - chasing with
everything it has. Ben Morgenrood (Ben Morgenrood Auto) was awesome
withstanding race long pressure in Heat 1 in Pretoria. He finished
third behind the Aubys, with Franco di Matteo (Varta Batteries
Jaguar) Danie Correia and Terry Wilford (Fuchs Titan Mustang) all
right on his rear wing. It shouldn't be any different at Killarney!
Wade van Zummeren (Border Towing Mustang) will also join the party
after missing Round 6, and that should spice things up a little
more. The fairer sex will be ably represented too. Clare Vale (Gatorback/RAM
Mustang) will be close to the pack at one of her favourite circuits,
with Vicki Kemp (Comptech/STC Jaguar) keeping her company after
another impressive outing at Zwartkops, where she was robbed of two
good finishes through no fault of her own..
In the GT Class, Larry Wilford (Mustang) has had his hands full this
season keeping Des Gutzeit (Dezzi/Trysome Mustang) and Darron
Gudmanz (Indigo Boats Corvette) at bay. The trio have shared the
laurels throughout the six contested rounds so far, and the winner
at Killarney should prove to be one of them. However, Roelf du
Plessis (RJ Panelbeaters Mustang) who has been plagued by mechanical
problems all year, could throw a spanner in the works - given a
trouble free day! Romano Sartori (AMC Jaguar) has also featured
strongly all year, and should deliver a solid performance again.
Wimpie van Zyl (Cool Bond Corvette) completes the line up in the GT
class, making his debut in 2010. |
