Brandon Auby (ELT International/SKF Jaguar) survived a scare in Heat 1
of the WesBank V8 Supercars at Killarney to maintain a small lead in
the Championship with two rounds to go. The youngster qualified in
pole position for Heat 1 of the Super GT Class, ahead of his father
Deon in a similar car. The pair led the field away, but after two
laps Deon had taken the lead, with Danie and Jaco Correia (Liqui
Moly Corvette) in hot pursuit with Brandon down in fourth place. As
Danie tried to pass Deon at Cape Town corner, the pair collided,
sending the latter into a spin, only to be collected by his son
Brandon ..... exit the two ELT International/SKF Jaguars. As a
result of the skirmish, Wade van Zummeren (Border Towing Mustang)
rammed into Ben Morgenrood (Ben Morgenrood Auto) and Wade was out
after two laps. Danie then sauntered off to an easy win with Jaco in
tow, followed over the line by Terry Wilford (Fuchs Titan Mustang)
in third place and Franco di Matteo (Varta Batteries Jaguar) in
fourth.
In the GT Class, Des Gutzeit (Dezzi/Trysome Mustang) won an easy
race, ahead of Darron Gudmanz (Indigo Boats Corvette) and Roelf du
Plessis ( RJ Panelbeaters Mustang)
The extensively repaired field then lined up for Heat 2, in a
partially inverted grid formation, with Brandon Auby at the back of
the field, driving Deon's car. Deon himself lined up alongside his
son in Vicki Kemp's Vixen Racing Jaguar, the young lady sportingly
giving up her chance of another go at the Killarney Raceway. Terry
Wilford led the charge initially, with Jaco and Wade close behind
him, but Jaco soon took the lead followed by Wade and a hard
charging Brandon, while Terry gradually fell back into the clutches
of Di Matteo and Morgenrood, behind whom he finished after a race
long scrap. Deon Auby retired with a loose seat in his borrowed
machine,
In the GT Class Des Gutzeit again made merry, to win from Darron
Gudmanz, and Romano Sartori. while Larry Wilford, beset by oil
cooler problems in his Mustang, retired to prevent engine damage.
Roelf du Plessis was another casualty finishing last with a badly
misfiring engine.
Although there are clear leaders at the head of both championships,
there is still everything to play for and East London's Grand Prix
Circuit hosts the penultimate round on the 30th of October.
